The project
What is The Not My Job Pod?
The Not My Job Pod is Emily Gant's project explaining German politics, bureaucracy and immigrant life in plain English, through short videos, Substack deep dives and conversations. Emily is a Berlin-based American immigrant.
I attempt to simplify complex German systems.
The economy, housing, migration, the far right, and all the stuff nobody explains when you do your Anmeldung. I break it down and ask the questions I actually had when I moved here.
I'm not a journalist or a news source. I'm a politically active person learning in real time, and my opinions shift as I do. If I get something wrong, I'll correct it publicly.
It's called Not My Job because it isn't. I work full-time in tech. This is what I do with the hours left over.

Why Germany's economic model stopped working

How "Made in Germany" went from insult to flex
A 19th-century British protectionist label became the world's quality stamp. Can it survive the EV shift?

Online hate

Institutions
Germany's institutional racism study
A major study found discriminatory attitudes in the public sector at roughly the same level as the general population. Why "average" isn't good enough.

Research
Online hate, digital violence & disinformation
I study how hate and disinformation campaigns spread online. Not in a lab, just in my (limited) free time, with a tech background that turns out to be pretty useful for it.
The deep dives live on Substack. There's also a bigger project in the works that I can't talk about yet. Watch this space.
